Attended a lovely wedding on Orcas Island this past weekend. Few shots are up at Flickr, and I'm working on getting them all notated now, but there's a break in the rain and I've got to go get some food to sustain me during this time at home!

Yam Crawl: Capitol Hill Seattle

Yam, Crawling, by Ana

To celebrate my last day on the job and T's last day of summer school, we put together a Yam Crawl last night. We took some pictures to document the adventure, so here's the shots and the reviews of the evening! Thanks to everyone who participated, we had so much fun and we ate SO MUCH YAM.

To Begin: Cafe Flora (2901 E Madison St (206-325-9100))

Yam Crawl: Cafe Flora

The team started at Cafe Flora for dinner and Yam Fries. Cafe Flora's Bucket o' Fries won us over from the start. The fries are a little floppy, large cut, not crunchy. Slight flavor on the fries, but the cayenne aioli dip is magical and transforms the already good fries into pure yam fry heaven. The table devoured two buckets, and scrapped the aioli cups completely clean.

Bucket of Yam Fries: $4.50

Smith Bar (332 15th Ave E (206-322-9420)

Yam Crawl: Smith Bar

Smith Bar was packed but we managed to squeeze 8 into a booth with some supplementary chairs. We ordered up some fries right away. These fries had an identity crisis. They were over salted, good crunch but strange flavor -- the yam inside was suspiciously white. Perhaps they were an odd type of sweet potato instead? The dip they came with was very odd, like tartar sauce with basil. Everyone chose ketchup instead.

Single serving: $5.00

Broadway Grill (314 Broadway E (206-328-7000))

Yam Crawl: Broadway Grill

Final Stop, Broadway Grill. These fries were the most fry-like: small, crunchy, no added seasoning. Came with two dips, but they were both a bit watery -- we ended up dipping ours into ketchup.

Sweet Potato Fries: $5.00

We intended to hit Kingfish on 19th and table 219 on Broadway, but Kingfish was a 45 minute wait for a table. The fries at Smith weren't that great, but the company and service was so good we lost track of time, so table 219 was closed by the time we got there. Thank goodness for Broadway Grill's awesome hours!

Hiatus

My old phone is dead, and for two weeks I will be without a data plan and so unable to post updates to blogger by phone. I've decided this is a good time to try to just take a break from lots of routine things, in the spirit of Vacation, so I'll be back to mobile blogging in a few weeks. In the meantime, I'll keep posting regular flickr photos as often as I can get to a computer.

Thanks for sticking around! I'm going to go enjoy being unemployed now.

so the damage from my fall two weeks ago is healing up, and in fact these photos of my bruise no longer really represent it, I think this was the height of the coloration and it has declined in the last few days. Still, though, my knee hurts when I walk and I'm limping everywhere. There are worse things, but I am still pretty bummed I can't fully enjoy my summer vacation :(

For some reason, my ballot did not arrive by mail, so I had to vote in person... Okay, Gregoire? I voted for you, so stop calling me!

Can't Do Justice

The camera phone fails to really capture this amazing sunset that just won't stop. I'm glad to sit on the balcony and watch it... The weather has been amazing here all week, but I have been trapped mostly indoors with a bad leg (limping around gave me shin splints!). My sister is here all week and she has been remarkably patient with the restrictions on our planned fun. I, on the other hand, am frustrated and eager to get back out there.

For now, though, I'll have to settle for the amazing sunsets.

Photos from our backpacking trip are up on Flickr! It was an ill-fated trip from the start -- we forgot a pair of hiking boots, were beset by an insane number of mosquitoes, and then I fell and damaged my leg with 2 miles to go to the car. We couldn't stop and and assess the damage because the bugs were so bad they were biting us through our netting and our multiple layers of clothes!

Now I'm home and laying on the couch with ice and an elevated foot trying to regain mobility in my right leg before I have to pay the doctor a lot of money to tell me to ice and elevate it.

May your adventures always be just this side of disastrous.

A Thousand Tiny Bites

Mosquito bites on my right hand. 38 in all. More than on my left hand, but half what's on my left hip.

Viewpoint at Hells Door

Went on an abbreviated backpacking trip this week with mom and Ana... we intended two days in Indian Heaven, a section of the Gifford Pinochet Wilderness down south by Mt. Adams. Instead, due to a combination of factors, we ditched the trip after the first night and hightailed it back to the safety of home! This is a gorgeous viewpoint just a few miles before the entrance to the park, that's Mt. St. Helens (missing her top, but lost in the fog) there in the center.
